Definition
Sovereign AI refers to a country or company building or buying its own AI infrastructure, models, and data controls so it isn't dependent on foreign providers for a strategically important technology. It spans data storage location, computing hardware, algorithms, and skilled staff, and is being sold commercially by cloud vendors as a packaged offering.
Why it matters
Governments and enterprises are spending billions on sovereignty initiatives whose actual security and independence benefits are often unproven — boards should scrutinize whether a 'sovereign' label delivers real risk reduction or just a premium price tag.
