Definition
A California law restricting how employers may use AI to make or materially influence employment decisions such as hiring, firing, discipline and work schedules, requiring human accountability in these processes. It was signed alongside roughly a dozen other California AI laws and is the first-in-the-nation constraint of its kind on AI in the workplace.
Why it matters
California is the largest US labour market and home to much of the global AI industry, so this law creates concrete compliance obligations for any organisation using AI in people management — even those headquartered elsewhere.
