Very Large Online Search Engine (VLOSE) designation

A legal label under the EU's Digital Services Act for search services with over 45 million monthly EU users, triggering the toughest tier of obligations: annual independent risk audits, transparency into how results/answers are generated, and stricter oversight. The EU applied this label to ChatGPT for the first time, treating its AI-generated answers like search results.
It shows regulators are willing to stretch existing platform laws to cover AI chatbots, meaning any AI product with a search-like function in the EU could face heavy new audit and transparency duties.
