What happened
OpenAI announced June 11 it will acquire Ona (formerly Gitpod GmbH), whose technology provides secure, persistent cloud execution environments for AI agents. Ona's infrastructure lets Codex agents operate inside a customer's own cloud — under the customer's security controls, credentials, and audit trail — across multi-hour or multi-day tasks without developer supervision. Codex now has 5M+ weekly users, up ~400% in 2026.
Why it matters
Moves the enterprise Codex security story from shared infrastructure to customer-controlled execution environments — a prerequisite for regulated-industry adoption (banking, pharma, sovereign wealth). Addresses the key enterprise objection: unattended agents operating on sensitive data outside the customer's security perimeter.
Applicability
Enterprise security architects evaluating AI coding agent deployment in regulated environments; watch for integration timeline post-regulatory approval.
