UK Government Launches Advisory AI Growth Labs — Legal Sector First, ICO and Three Regulators Collaborate

RegulatoryMedium impactUnited Kingdom
On June 8, 2026, at the UK's first-ever AI Adoption Summit, the Government launched Advisory AI Growth Labs — a multi-regulator advisory sandbox designed to help AI innovators navigate existing regulatory requirements with greater clarity. The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), Council for Licensed Conveyancers, Solicitors Regulation Authority, and Legal Services Board are the founding participating regulators, with legal services / LawTech selected as the first focus sector. Over £200M of government AI adoption support was announced alongside the lab. Applications from LawTech firms, legal service providers, and conveyancing companies will open later in summer 2026.
This is the UK's most structured AI governance initiative to date, bringing data protection (ICO), financial/professional services regulators, and legal regulators into a coordinated cross-regulatory forum for the first time. The lab model — advisory sandbox rather than a hard regulatory regime — signals the UK's approach to AI governance ahead of any AI-specific legislation, giving AI security consulting clients a concrete venue to test and validate AI deployments in regulated sectors. The model is expected to expand to other sectors through 2026.
Clients in UK legal services and LawTech should monitor the application window opening this summer and assess whether sandbox participation could provide regulatory pre-clearance value for AI deployments. Consulting teams should brief clients on the difference between this advisory sandbox model and the EU AI Act's more prescriptive approach.
