An updated Model Spec for more capable and beneficial AI

Strategic ReportMedium impactGlobal
OpenAI published an updated Model Spec (October 29, 2026), its public framework for model behavior, reorganizing its guidance around five underlying values: faithfulness to human intent, harm minimization, honesty and transparency, human agency, and care. The revision adds guidance on context, oversight, and agency, adjusts some behavioral defaults, and retires much of the detailed style guidance — reflecting an aim of value-alignment work 'for models to understand and apply human values in unfamiliar situations, while remaining faithful to human intent.' It is a genuine substantive update, not a re-release.
The Model Spec is OpenAI's public statement of how its models should behave and a reference point for safety and alignment expectations; this reorganisation around core values signals how the lab will weigh trade-offs as models take more consequential, agentic actions.
Review the updated Spec against your model-governance and acceptance criteria, particularly agentic oversight and faithfulness-to-intent requirements.
