What happened
The UK government published the AI sector study 2025, quantifying the size, scale and profile of private-sector AI business activity. Headline metrics: an estimated 130,400 people were employed in AI-related roles (+51% on 2024), AI-related revenues increased 41% to £33.6 billion, AI-related gross value added rose 58% to £18.6 billion, and 10,488 AI companies were identified (+79% on 2024). Methodology combined secondary data, a survey of 376 AI companies and 50 in-depth interviews with AI business, academic, policy and investor stakeholders. Access to capital was the most significant growth constraint (61% of survey respondents), 72% of businesses reported an increased compute requirement over the past 12 months (up from 66% in 2024), and 25% cited lack of regulatory clarity as a significant barrier (up from 16% in 2024).
