What happened
In the week of 20-22 October 2026 the SABS opened a public consultation (submissions until 10 November 2026) on a set of draft AI standards proposed as South African versions of existing ISO/IEC AI documents. They cover: SANS 12792 (transparency — what information different stakeholders need about an AI system, its model and its data); the SANS 2620 series (data quality for analytics and machine learning across the AI lifecycle, including governance); SATS 8200 (controllability of automated AI systems, including human/monitor intervention); SATR 24030 (examples of beneficial AI applications across sectors); and SATR 20226 (environmental impacts of AI systems, incl. resource use, carbon, pollution and waste). They are voluntary unless later made compulsory through another legal mechanism.
Why it matters
This is a national standards body progressing from AI policy/principle statements to concrete technical standards, and it does so by adopting international ISO/IEC AI documents. It matters for the African AI-governance landscape and signals how ISO/IEC AI-security/assurance texts get transposed into national law-adjacent instruments; it also gives procurement and development organisations operating in South Africa a concrete, commentable normative baseline for AI transparency, data quality and human control.
Action needed
Stakeholders in the South African market should review and submit comments before the 10 November 2026 deadline, and map internal AI governance to these SANS/SATS drafts if they serve South African customers or regulators.
