What happened
On 20 October 2026 the OWASP GenAI Security Project's AI Red Teaming Initiative released v1.0 of its 'GenAI Red Teaming Manual: A Practical Guide for Adversarial Testing of Generative AI Models & Systems' — a 144-page publication free to download at genai.owasp.org. It sets out an eight-phase methodology (planning/scoping, reconnaissance, attack-surface mapping, direct AI/multimodal vulnerability testing, agentic attack vectors incl. privilege escalation, guardrail evasion and resource-exhaustion, post-exploitation/impact and blast-radius mapping, evaluation and reporting, and remediation), with reproducible metrics and explicit red-to-blue handoff so findings translate into fixes.
Why it matters
It fills a real gap: most practical GenAI security guidance stops at prompt injection, whereas this manual gives a structured, vendor-neutral, end-to-end methodology for adversarial testing of generative and agentic systems, including agent privilege escalation and guardrail evasion. It complements the OWASP Top 10 for LLM/Agentic Applications and gives red teams, QA, and auditors a common method and metrics for scoping and reporting AI assessments.
Action needed
Adopt the manual's eight-phase methodology for LLM/agentic red-teaming engagements; align exercise scoping, metrics, and red-to-blue handoff to it; use it to plan evaluations against OWASP Top 10 risks.
