What happened
The 11th annual e-Conomy SEA report, published October 21, 2026 by Google, Temasek, and Bain & Company, finds generative AI has become mainstream in Southeast Asia faster than any prior technology: '243 million people in SEA-6, or 58% of the working population, have adopted generative AI in less than three years,' scaling 'four times faster than the rollout of the mobile internet.' The region's digital economy is projected to grow 17% year-on-year to $368 billion in gross merchandise value in 2026, on track to exceed $1 trillion by 2035, with the report projecting a '60-fold surge in regional AI usage over the next five years' as agentic commerce takes hold — 75% of users say they are willing to let AI agents autonomously compare prices and complete transactions, and 62% trust AI tools more than a year ago. AI-focused companies captured 80% of regional private capital deployment in the last six months (up from 30% in H2 2024), while digital infrastructure investment reached $20 billion over the past twelve months.
Why it matters
The most comprehensive quantitative picture of how AI is driving a major digital economy, and a leading indicator for agentic commerce globally: adoption, monetization (only 1-2% of SEA users paying for AI today), trust, and the ~3x data-center capacity expansion the report says is needed to sustain AI growth — all inputs to market-entry, investment, and infrastructure decisions.
Action needed
Benchmark SEA market-entry and AI monetization assumptions against these usage, trust, and infrastructure figures, and track the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA) signature in November 2026 as the next regional catalyst.
