IETF new Internet-Draft (OAuth WG): 'The Intent Token — A Credential for Delegated User Intent' (draft-chen-oauth-agent-intent-token-00)

GuidelinesMedium impactGlobal
On 19 October 2026 a new OAuth Working Group Internet-Draft (draft-chen-oauth-agent-intent-token-00, Standards Track) was published by authors from China Mobile and Huawei. It introduces an 'Intent Token': a signed credential that immutably captures a user's high-level natural-language intent, decoupling intent grant from access-token issuance. An Authorization Server interprets the intent and issues narrowly-scoped, short-lived access tokens under least privilege, addressing the semantic gap in AI-agent authorization.
This is a working-group (not merely individual) response to the core agentic-AI authorization problem: translating user intent into safe, least-privilege grants. It is directly relevant to OAuth-based agent identity/authorization efforts the IETF OAuth WG is standardizing and will shape how vendors implement agent permission models.
Track OAuth WG deliberations; assess Intent Token model against existing agent identity/authorization implementations and comment on the draft.
