What happened
Palo Alto Networks announced Idira, a new identity security platform designed to secure human, machine, and AI agent identities across enterprise systems. Idira expands privileged access management (PAM) capabilities, includes just-in-time access controls, AI-driven risk detection, and automated governance across the identity lifecycle. The platform is generally available with additional capabilities (machine and AI identity protections) expected later in 2026.
Why it matters
Idira reflects the industry consensus that AI agents and non-human identities now outnumber human users inside enterprises and require first-class identity governance. This signals that traditional PAM platforms are insufficient for agentic environments, and that 'identity as the new attack surface' is a top-down strategic shift driven by vendor maturation, not just emerging threats.
Applicability
Organizations deploying agentic AI (autonomous workflows, coding agents, API agents) should evaluate Idira or equivalent platforms for least-privilege governance, ephemeral access, and anomaly detection. Particularly relevant for: (1) enterprises using Claude Code or similar agent frameworks, (2) organizations with high-volume API agent deployments, and (3) financial services and critical infrastructure operators.
