IETF draft: The Agent Identity Document (draft-alla-agent-identity-document-00)

GuidelinesMedium impactGlobal
On 3 October 2026 (last updated 5 October 2026, in the reporting window) a new individual Internet-Draft was submitted to the IETF datatracker: 'The Agent Identity Document: A Hosted, Accountable Public Record for AI Agents' (draft-alla-agent-identity-document-00). It specifies a small JSON document served at a well-known URI on a hostname assigned to an autonomous agent, separating provider-verified facts (hostname, service endpoints, lifecycle status) from operator-asserted claims (description, contact, public key). Lifecycle status (active/suspended) is distinguished from availability; agents are never account holders and never hold authority over DNS. The draft describes a practice in production at one provider (knownAs.dev / Authecity Systems LLC) and requests registration of a well-known URI suffix.
Autonomous AI agents increasingly act on the public internet with no checkable name or accountable party. This is the first in-window IETF-track document proposing a concrete hosted identity/accountability record for agents (distinct from the separate A2A agent-card work it maps onto), giving counterparts a way to verify an agent's identity, lifecycle, and operator — a foundation for agent-to-agent trust and incident attribution.
Agent platform providers, identity providers, and standards watchers should review the draft and submit comments; implementers of agent identity/accountability can evaluate the well-known-URI format as a candidate for adoption or interop.
