Sens. Peters & Lankford reintroduce Transparent Automated Governance Act — federal AI transparency for high-stakes decisions

RegulatoryMedium impactUnited States
Around 6-7 October 2026, Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Ranking Member Gary Peters (D-MI) and Sen. James Lankford (R-OK) reintroduced the Transparent Automated Governance Act, which would require the Office of Management and Budget to issue guidelines for federal agencies to disclose their use of AI in making high-stakes decisions and to establish a clear path to redress for affected individuals.
It is the principal in-window bipartisan federal AI-transparency bill, and would create direct transparency/redress duties for every US federal agency deploying AI in consequential decisions — a large affected population and a compliance signal for federal contractors and agencies' AI vendors.
Federal agencies and government AI/AI-aaS vendors should monitor the bill; its OMB-guideline mechanism would set the baseline for disclosure and redress requirements if enacted.
