South Asia Economic Update, October 2026: Adopting AI for Growth

Strategic ReportMedium impactGlobal
The World Bank's flagship twice-yearly South Asia Economic Update (released 6 October 2026) is titled 'Adopting AI for Growth,' using quantitative forecasting and firm-level analysis to argue AI can be a new driver of growth in the region. It projects South Asia growth rising to 6.9% in 2026 before easing to 6.7% in 2027, and finds AI adoption is rising but well behind advanced economies — 'around 23% of Indian firms report using AI, compared to 43% in the United States,' with the gap wider for more sophisticated uses. The report documents AI expanding export opportunities through global value chain links for South Asian suppliers, and successful public-service use cases such as AI-based weather forecasts for smallholder farmers in India and AI-assisted retinal screening in Bangladesh, while warning a 'sharp reversal in global artificial intelligence (AI) investment could trigger financial strains.' Policy recommendations focus on workforce skills, a business-enabling environment, physical and digital infrastructure, and a clear regulatory framework 'that reduces uncertainty and safeguards data security and privacy.'
This is the first World Bank regional flagship to put AI adoption at the center of its growth thesis, giving policy and corporate leaders a concrete read on AI's development-economics case and the regulatory enablers that matter for emerging-market AI expansion.
For teams expanding AI into South Asian markets, review the report's evidence on AI value-chain exposure, skills gaps, and the regulatory/data-privacy framework recommendations that shape the operating environment.
