What happened
Microsoft's AI Economy Institute published its Q2 2026 Global AI Diffusion Report on 21 September, the quarterly update to its cross-country AI adoption measurement series. The headline statistic: "In June, AI usage was 18.8% of the working-age population worldwide, an increase of about 1% from the first quarter of this year." The UAE (73.3%) and Singapore (64.3%) continue to top the leaderboard, while the AI gap between the Global North and Global South widened — usage reached 28.8% in the North versus 16.2% in the South. The report adds a substantive new section on open-weight AI models, showing they have captured a growing share of API token volume and could lower access costs for the Global South, and documents rapid developer-ecosystem growth (Hugging Face Spaces rising from ~124,000 in 2023 to 1.46 million by September 2026).
