EY US AI Risk and Governance Survey: AI Governance Has Entered Its Next Phase — Closing the Confidence Gap

Strategic ReportMedium impactUnited States
EY's inaugural AI Risk and Governance Survey of 202 senior AI executives (board members, C-suite, VP+) at U.S. publicly traded companies with $1B+ annual revenue finds that while 98% report having formal AI governance policies, about two-thirds are concerned about a lack of internal expertise to evolve (69%), implement (63%), or design (63%) governance controls. 47% of respondents admit their organization has previously skipped its AI governance process for urgent deployments, even as AI-related incidents, cyber risk, and shadow AI grow more common.
Quantifies the widening gap between governance design and operational reality at the largest U.S. companies — a clear benchmark for boards assessing their own AI governance maturity against peers.
Benchmark internal AI governance maturity against the survey's findings and address identified expertise gaps in governance implementation.
