AI Will Shift $4.7 Trillion in Profits. What's Your Stake?

Strategic ReportHigh impactGlobal
Bain & Company published this analysis on 8 September 2026 finding that AI puts $4.7 trillion of global corporate profits at stake between now and 2035 — more than triple the $1.4 trillion profit shift caused by the Internet, achieved in half the time. Based on analysis across 92 individual sectors, the report finds AI will structurally transform 71% of sectors (versus 41% for the Internet), with only 24% of the profit shift ($1.1 trillion) coming from productivity gains, while 47% ($2.2 trillion) comes from new innovation and 28% ($1.3 trillion) from market-share redistribution among competitors. The report argues AI, unlike the Internet's distribution focus, is a production technology that reaches deep into industrial manufacturing, healthcare delivery and pharma R&D that the Internet never touched.
CEOs and boards need a sector-specific read on where AI will redraw competitive advantage — the report's finding that 75% of profit impact comes from innovation and share shifts (not just productivity) reframes AI strategy from a cost-cutting exercise to an existential competitive battleground.
Executive teams should request a sector-specific breakdown of the report's 92-industry profit-pool analysis and stress-test current AI investment plans against the innovation/market-share-shift categories, not just productivity ROI.
