AI Agents Are Only the Beginning: The Path to Agentic Transformation

Strategic ReportMedium impactUnited States
Deloitte's Center for Technology, Media & Telecommunications published new research based on a survey of 501 leaders involved in their organization's agentic AI strategy or implementation plus interviews with 20 executives and AI/data-science leaders. The report finds most organizations remain stuck in early-stage deployment: 42% are still testing small numbers of AI agents, 43% are expanding deployment across functions, and only 15% have reached scaled, orchestrated, multi-agent adoption — concentrated in lower-risk, repeatable use cases like customer service, IT, and engineering. The central argument is that capturing agentic AI's full value requires organizations to redesign work and organizational systems around agents, not simply deploy the technology, because an 'agentic enterprise' operates fundamentally differently from today's organizations.
Gives executives a benchmark for where peer organizations actually stand on agentic AI maturity (only 15% at scale) and reframes the challenge from a technology deployment problem to an organizational-redesign problem — directly informing operating-model and workforce-transformation roadmaps.
Benchmark internal agentic AI deployment maturity against the 42/43/15 industry split and assess whether organizational and workforce redesign plans are keeping pace with agent deployment.
