UK DSIT launches advisory 'AI Growth Lab' regulatory sandbox, starting with legal services

RegulatoryMedium impactUnited Kingdom
On 3 August 2026, the UK Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade (via DSIT) published guidance launching the 'advisory AI Growth Lab,' a new regulatory sandbox intended to help AI innovators navigate existing regulatory frameworks with greater confidence. Legal services is the first sector in scope; applications opened 3 August 2026 and close 27 September 2026, with a launch webinar scheduled 10 August 2026. Participation does not confer regulatory approval, endorsement, or exemption from legal obligations — organisations remain responsible for complying with all applicable law.
This establishes the UK's first cross-regulator AI sandbox mechanism aimed at legal-tech/LawTech providers and signals DSIT's approach of using advisory sandboxes (rather than new statute) to shape AI governance in regulated professional sectors — a template likely to expand to other regulated industries (health, financial services) and relevant to any AI vendor targeting the UK legal market.
Legal-tech and AI vendors targeting UK legal services should evaluate eligibility and consider applying before the 27 September 2026 deadline; attend the 10 August 2026 launch webinar for application guidance.
